Directory Audit Report
A scan of 4,847 files across 312 folders has been completed. The structure has grown organically over several years and shows clear signs of drift — duplicate files across projects, inconsistent naming, and abandoned folders consuming significant space.
Critical Findings
Three issues require immediate attention before any reorganisation begins.
- Finance folder — 3 versions of the same spreadsheet, one marked “FINAL”, one “FINAL_v2”, one “FINAL_USE_THIS”. Reconcile immediately.
- Client X project — Files scattered across 4 different directories with no clear primary location.
- Backup folder — Contains what appears to be a full system backup from 2023. Verify before deleting.
Storage Breakdown by Category
Media and assets dominate storage. Most of this is working files from completed projects that have never been archived or removed.
File Age Distribution
Over half the files haven’t been touched in more than a year. This is the primary cleanup target.
Duplicate File Report
203 duplicate files consuming 1.8 GB. These are exact byte-for-byte matches detected by hash comparison — not filename matches.
6 copies of quarterly-report.xlsx across 3 folders. Keep newest, archive rest. Saves 240 MB.
31 copies of company logo in various folders. Consolidate to /assets/branding/. Saves 180 MB.
14 duplicate PDF reports in both project folders and email-attachments folder. Remove from email-attachments.
8 copies of slide deck from 2024 conference. Keep master copy only.
42 screenshot files duplicated between Desktop and Downloads. Clear Downloads.
18 copies of document templates scattered across project folders. Centralise to /templates/.

| strong | Bottom Line |
This structure is manageable with a single focused cleanup session. The 14.2 GB of recoverable space is largely low-hanging fruit — duplicates, an old backup, and project files from completed work. The finance folder conflict should be resolved first as it carries the highest risk of confusion. After that, archiving old projects and centralising assets will transform this into a structure that stays clean with minimal maintenance.
